York College of the City University of New York is a public institution, founded in 1966, and it is one of eleven senior colleges in the City University of New York system.
Located in Jamaica, Queens in New York City, it was the first senior college founded under the newly formed CUNY system, which united several previously independent public colleges into a single public university system in 1961.
The college utilizes a semester-based academic calendar.
York offers a number of student services including non-remedial tutoring, placement service, day care, and health service. It is organized into three schools, each focused on a set of related programs and departments. These three schools are:
1. The School of Arts and Sciences – providing students with the opportunity to obtain an excellent education in the arts, mathematics, humanities, and the natural sciences.
2. The School of Health and Behavioral Sciences - providing a diverse student population with programs that receive national recognition and professional accreditation.
3. The School of Business and Information Systems – introducing students to all of the fundamental business disciplines, allowing them a wide range of choices when selection their major field of study.
Through these Schools, the college offers B.S. and B.A. degrees in over 4 different liberal arts, professional majors and sciences. These majors include English, Spanish, History, Chemistry, Biology, Physician Assistant, Journalism, Nursing, Communications Technology, and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
York College offers a variety of majors and minors in almost every discipline, and it also brings professional programs in business, information systems management, generic nursing, accounting, social work and allied health sciences to traditionally under served populations.
It offers certificate programs in a variety of fields such as: mortgage finance, survey research, youth work, and Spanish for professional purposes.
York College offers a variety of scholarships, both retention and merit. The college is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the Association of Colleges and Universities of the State of New York.
The faculty, the students, and the administrative staff of York College participate in College governance, which is conducted according to procedures outlined in the bylaws of CUNY and in the York College Charter as approved by the Board of Trustees of CUNY.
York College has an enrollment of more than 7,000 students, which hail from more than 50 different countries of birth. The York College Library subscribes to dozens of electronic resources, as well as print journals, in order to support the research needs of the faculty and students.
Notable programs at York College are: Honors Program, Nursing, Physician Assistant, and Occupational Therapy. The York College students progress toward graduation at different rates, most of them combine the role of student with that of employee or parent which may necessitate part-time enrollment or temporary leaves from their academic pursuits.
The College campus size is 50 acres, and it is the Academic Core, which houses classrooms, laboratories, the library, computer facilities, academic and administrative offices, lecture halls, art studios, as well as dining facilities and a bookstore.
In cooperation with national, local, and international partners, the CUNY Aviation Institute develops teaching materials regarding airlines, service providers, civil aviation authorities, airports, and related industries, developing programs of study at all academic levels, including credit and non-credit courses. The Institute also promotes research and academic exchange of ideas in the field of aviation and assists in the training of professional educators and researchers. The York College Aviation Club was established to promote aviation within the York College community of students, staff, and faculty, and it unites, guides, and supports Aviation Management students.
In addition to the CUNY Aviation Institute, the College is home to the Northeast Regional U.S Food and Drug Administration Headquarters.
